We offer:
Group Classes--Private Lessons--and In Your Home instruction.
Our group classes consist of: Best Puppy, Advanced Pup, Beginner OB (101) 102 & 103. We also have specialty classes like 'HEEL" class and "Canine Acting." All classes are limited to 7-8 dogs. NOSEWORK -Beginners class is NOW part of our curriculum with a 6 dog limit.
We are extremely fortunate to have the most amazing instructors ever! Everyone associated with Southern Tails Dog School thoroughly enjoys being in the company of dogs and with other humans who feel the same way! We are all highly experienced with all of the newest positive dog training methods. Our goal is to teach you how to communicate and train your dog to exhibit the behavior you will need in order to completely share your life with your canine companion.
We also have another dog related business called "Canine Players Dogs For Film". It keeps us very busy. Many of the Southern Tails canine alumni are currently doing commercials, ads and modeling shoots.

(tiny breeds up the 20 wks) Pups must have at least the 1st vaccine and remain currtThis important time in your pups life is when you can jump start their brain to begin to understand how to communicate with the new humans in their lives. By teaching them our English language words: sit, stand, down, come, off, and intro stay you will begin the journey of communication between our species. House-training, Crate training, Mouthing, Socializing, Body Posture, Grooming, Greetings & Obstacle week.
OB 101 Beginner OBEDIENCE class for ALL dogs over 4 1/2 months to Adult
Mon Oct 9th 7:30-8:30
This is a beginner OB class. The class meets once a week for 6 weeks.
It includes the basic behavior commands along with two focus ones to give you more control when you need it. You will learn how to redirect the behavior you don't want to the newly learned behavior. It also includes the bonus of how to teach your dog to properly greet humans along with some must know canine behavior facts. This class is not suitable for highly reactive dogs. Call us for private lessons.
Advanced PUP for the Smart Best pupPY grads

For: The Best Puppy Class Graduates. We hone your dog trainer skills by teaching you: proper leash handling, timing of praise and interruption along with the correct body posture, facial expression and voice tone to train your dogs. Learning these skills make it a clear path for your dog to understand how to get what they want by responding more reliably to what you want. During this course you will begin to see the communication bridge that connects us.
OB 102

Everyone's FAVORITE class!!! 102 is for either Advanced pup grads or OB 101 grads. 102 is the beginning of Advanced Dog Training. This course teaches you how to train your dog to respond to commands with distraction and distance. Your instructor will help you sharpen the must have dog trainer skills: timing, voice tone, body posture, and leash skills. You will learn the 'place' command, and of course new words!!! OB 103 FOR 102 grads

This class is for those who LOVE to train their dogs. It sharpens your dog trainer skills with heel, stay, off, come etc and challenges you to practice working with distractions and distance.
It is usually a small group of students who throughly enjoy working closely with others who also enjoy being in the company of those that LOVE to train their dogs.
HEEL CLASS with Kate

For Dogs who have completed OB 102 or have similar skills. HEELING your dog is the most fun ever. It is the safest way to take your dog out in public. 'HEE'L means that once you give the command to HEEL as you step off.....your dog must stay attentive at your side no matter what pace you are moving and no matter what is going on around you. When you stop, your dog will sit close at your left side. Yes, it's super cool and yes, it is a lot of work! It is like learning a line dance together.

Specialty classes
CCG Prep Class+ Test
We suggest OB 102 or 103 grads or any dog with similar skills for this course. Canine Good Citizen is an AKC certification. Your dog must pass a 10 step test to receive it. The test basically includes properly meeting and greeting a stranger, another dog, walking calmly on a leash, staying in place, coming when called, remaining calm and completely controllable around a wheel chair, sudden noises, letting a stranger lightly groom them, and being left with a stranger for a brief amount of time

TAKE A PICTURE OF YOUR DOG'S CURRENT VACCINES AND TEXT IT TO ME AT 336-953-7632 BEFORE YOUR CLASS STARTS.
If you are taking the puppy class let your Vet know that you are coming to school so they can give the Bordetella at the appropriate time in your pup's schedule.

Entering the class
Look for your dog's name that will be written on a bone shaped tag taped to the wall above your set of chairs.. Go directly there, sit down, relax and get your treats out to be ready to reward your dog's good behavior. Enjoy your class and the special night out with your canine companion.
Bring Dog Treats To Class
Bring some tasty small healthy treats to class. We use a lot of food rewards for the first 3 weeks. There is a lot going on at dog school so your special tasty treats will make it easier for your dog to pay attention to you . Make a trail mix of treats and include cheese and cooked chicken just in case. There are usually a variety of treats on the cutting board by the instructors counter if you need extra tasty treats. We also sell treats and training treat bags in the store.
Any 5-6 foot leash is fine. We do not use any retractable leashes for dog training. They might be OK for beach walks (maybe) but certainly not for dogs out in public. We feel they teach the dog exactly the opposite of what we want them to learn. They are a hazard and an accident waiting to happen when used on large dogs.
Be a leader
When you walk into the building try and act like you own the place. If you appear confident that will greatly help your dog to feel safe. Walk to your seat without hesitation and get settled. Get your treats out and reward good/calm behavior. Do not let your dog drag you over in another dog's space. Not all dogs will feel fine with another dog invading their space, especially if he or she is on a leash.
If your dog is not feeling well
Do not bring your dog to school if he or she is not feeling well. If your dog is not contagious you can come without your dog and sit on the couch to observe the class. This is not uncommon.
My dog had spay/neuter surgery
We suggest you make their surgery appt the day after your class night. That gives them time to recover. Also of course let your instructor know about the surgery. If that is impossible, come to school without your dog and sit on the couch and observe the class.
How many people can come to class?
The people who are going to take turns working the dog during the class should come. We would appreciate everyone staying together in their family group as opposed to walking around the building during the class. There is a restroom in the training room.
What if I miss a class?
This is not unusual...between kids, parents, & unexpected appts, there is always someone that cannot make class. We regret we cannot offer make up sessions due to the numerous times this happens. Our instructors only come to the dog school to teach their classes or to do scheduled private lesson appts. We have found that most students do fine with catching up during class. If you feel that you need significant extra instruction you can schedule a one hour private lesson for the cost of $85
My dog is in season
Call, email or text us so your instructor will know ahead of time to set the room up for safety. You will enter and be seated next to back door in the training room. You will also leave through that door. Put some type of panties on your dog for the class time. We have never had any issues using this method but your judgement is the most important.
Try not to come to class too early...We love having you at dog school but..
We do not mean 10 mins early, we mean 20 mins-1/2 hour early. If you are taking a 7:30 class, the parking lot will be full until the 6:00 class has departed. Your instructor will be setting the training room up for your class. She will be organizing the homework woof words, sanitizing the chairs, sweeping the floor. or maybe eating a quick bite before the classes start since she will be there late. You are welcome to walk around outside. The front door is opened 10 mins before class starts.
MiniLesson...extra help for all dog school students:
We offer a special mini lesson only to the students who are taking courses at school. $45 for the 1/2 hour Mini Lesson
1. Off leash come
2. Biting & pulling pant legs, bathrobes etc....
3. Counter surfing
4. Jumping on humans, guests or family & similar undesired behaviors.
Private Lessons at school ------ or in your home
Private Lessons at the Dog School are for those:
- who cannot commit to a 6 week evening course
- for humans who have major difficultly controlling their dogs
- dogs who are reactive to other dogs
- dogs who are severely shy
- who have aggressive dogs
- for newly acquired rescue dogs
- for all dogs and their humans who just prefer one on one
- for dogs with behavior issues
$259 for 3 Private Lessons at the Dog School. You and your instructor can decide the day and time of your dog training lesson appointments. Please give us a 24 hr notice if you have to cancel as our instructors only come into the dog school to teach classes and give private lessons.
THE 3 LESSON PRIVATE OR IN-YOUR-HOME PACKAGE MUST BE COMPLETED WITHIN 3 MONTHS OF YOUR 1ST LESSON.
$300 For 3 ' IN YOUR HOME' LESSONS

- for people who just prefer that we come to you
- for people who have family members that cannot come to the dog school
An extra travel charge will be added if it is required.

Ally teaches some private lessons but after 30 years has turned the group classes over to our amazing instructors. Gary is our office manager and repair all guy. We also both work at our other business " Canine Players-Dogs for Film" which keeps us very busy. We live with 6 canines: Jack, Cote, Bill, Molly. Mick , and Dylan and 2 felines, Morgan, Pete the cat and 5 chickens.

Charlie who is a talker used to say 'Good Boy' all day long until Josie the pup came along and now he says: "OFF" and 'DROP IT" all day long. She also has 2 cats in her life:

I understand that attendance of any dog training classes or dog event at the Southern Tails Dog School location or if the class takes place outside of the dog school is not without risk to myself, members of my family or guests who may attend, or my dog, because some of the dogs to which I will be exposed may be difficult to control and may be the cause of injury even when handled with the greatest amount of care. I hereby waive and release, Southern Tails, it’s instructors, officers, members and agents from any and all liability of any nature, for injury or damage which I or my dog may suffer, including specifically, but without limitation, any injury or damage resulting from the action of any dog, and I expressly assume risk of such damage or injury while attending any training session, or while on the training grounds or the surrounding area thereto.
I hereby agree to indemnify and hold harmless, Southern Tails, it’s instructors, officers, members and agents from any and all claims, or claims by any member of any family or any other person accompanying me to any training session or function of Southern Tails, or while on the grounds or the surrounding area thereto as a result of any action by any dog, including my own.
